Extension staff and Agro input dealers empowered on safe handling and use of Agro chemicals.
A team from Bukoola Chemical Industries Limited conducted a training of Agricultural Extension officers and Agro input dealers of Budaka District on product knowledge, safe handling and use of Agro chemicals for improved service delivery. in the District Council chambers.The training that took place in the District Council chambers followed several issues relating to mishandling and use of chemicals by farmers, Agro input dealers and distributors.While training the members, Mr. Bwire Joseph Sitabona, the Regional Agronomist Eastern Uganda working with Bukoola Chemical Industries Limited, informed members that the biggest challenge affecting the farming system was pests like insects and diseases that cause poor yields.He encouraged the Agro input dealers to always share with farmers the different pesticides, insecticides, fungicides(pests) and herbicides(weeds) that are in the market and also advise them on the best ways to manage them.He also warned the farmers against reusing containers, bottles and Sackets after using Agrochemicals but rather collect them and handover to extension workers who call the companies for disposal.“Farmers should always wear protective gear while using Agrochemicals to avoid getting infections,” Mr. Bwire said.He also took them through the different fertilizers to use to improve on their crop yields like the foliar and basal fertilizers. Mr. Bwire highlighted the principles to follow while using a fertilizer like Right fertilizer, right rate of application, right method of application and the right time of application for best results.He also emphasized the different categories of herbicides used like pre-emergency and post emergency depending on the timing. He noted that selective herbicides that can be used for crops like beans, soya beans, green grams and ground nuts while nonselective herbicides are for rice, maize, millets and sorghum.He further explained the product knowledge training on insecticides that are used in 04 stages of planting, vegetative, productive, flowering stages and the quantities of insecticides to use.“I advise Agro input dealers to always ask the farmer the stage of his crop before selling an insecticide to them,”Mr. Bwire said.Mr. Bwire added that they do Cooperate Social Responsibility through training and help formalize the registration process of businesses of Agro-input dealers and distributors to enable them to retain their customers and have a clear schedule for their record and follow up.The Acting District Production Officer for Budaka, Mr. Asuman Makuma Khawanga, said that the training was timely for all the stakeholders ahead of the farming period.He called upon the team to take keen adherence to the training to be able to address challenges relating to use of Agro-chemicals amidst several value chains that farmers are in like fish farming, livestock and poultry among others for better management of diseases and pests. The different stakeholders appreciated the team from Bulooba for the knowledge imparted to them and promised to empower their farmers too for better yields.
